As the years pass by, have you noticed that
your face looks tired, less vibrant, and significantly older? Are
there folds and creases around your nose and mouth, a loss of
muscle tone in the lower face, or loose skin and fatty deposits
under the jaw that make you appear to have a “double chin”? If so,
you may have been thinking about how you can restore your youthful
appearance. A facelift may be the answer you are looking for. At
our practice located in
Arroyo Grande, California
(CA), we attempt to
provide information that will be helpful in deciding if a facelift
is the answer for your concerns.A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a
surgical procedure that will improve visible signs of aging in the
face and neck. A facelift corrects sagging facial skin and
muscles, removes excess fat, and restores firmness to create a
more rested and vibrant appearance. In the past, patients were
concerned that they would have a “plastic” or pulled look after
surgery. That is no longer the case. We take an artistic approach
to personalize the surgery for each individual. Often, no one can
tell that you have had a facelift, yet you can look up to ten
years younger and look younger naturally. The average facelift
done today lasts ten to fifteen years and follow-up procedures can
be performed to keep you looking youthful for many more years.
A consultation is the first step to learn how a facelift can
improve facial sagging and aging. During the
consultation with
Dr. Yannis, it will be explained who the best candidates are for
facelift surgery: Women and men whose face and neck still have
good skin elasticity, as well as those with strong and
well-defined bone structure are usually the best candidates. The
best candidates are those who are non-smokers, have no
life-threatening illnesses or medical conditions that can impair
healing, and who have realistic goals in mind for the improving
their appearance.
Before you have your surgery, we will explain in detail what
will take place during the procedure. We will provide you with
specific instructions regarding pre-surgical considerations,
diagnostic testing, and medications. Also, we will cover what will
occur on the day of surgery, the medication; and specific
information related to the use of anesthesia during surgery.
Facelift incisions generally begin in the hairline at the
temples, continue around the ear, and end in the lower scalp. Fat
is then redistributed from the face, neck, and jowls. The
underlying tissue is repositioned and skin is re-draped over the
uplifted contours with excess skin trimmed away. A small incision
under the chin may be necessary to improve an aging neckline.
Using sutures or skin adhesives will usually close the incisions.
It will be explained to you and your designated care taker how
to care for the surgical area, as well as medications to apply or
take orally to aid in healing. We also indicate the specific signs
to look for around the surgical areas, to help reduce possible
complications during the healing process. We will also remind you
of your previously scheduled follow-up appointment.
There will be some bruising and swelling after the procedure,
along with numbness and discomfort. You will be provided with
medication that can control the discomfort. The bruising usually
fades within two weeks, and after a few days you will be able to
wear camouflage makeup. Your healing process will continue for a
few more weeks as the swelling lessens and the incision lines
begin to fade. It is important that you follow the specific
instructions given to you and attend follow-up visits as
scheduled.
At your Initial
Consultation
you will be introduced to
Dr. Yannis and he will explain the different options for you in
detail. He will also take a complete medical history in order to
evaluate your general health.
Cosmetic surgery is an elective
surgery and your surgeon wants to ensure that you are in the best
health to undergo anesthesia and the recovery process of such
surgery. Dr. Yannis requires a complete history and physical
performed by your family physician that includes some lab tests to
ensure that you are medically cleared to undergo anesthesia and
the surgery.
